A Wedding at Home or Away?

The pros and cons of marrying abroad

When you’re caught up in the stress of planning a wedding, it can be so tempting to turn to your partner and suggest disappearing abroad for an intimate overseas wedding...

So why don’t you? We spoke to two Australian wedding celebrants to get their views on the pros and cons of marrying at home compared to marrying abroad!

Jennifer Michael from Jennifer Michael Weddings & Events is a Sydney based wedding and event planner. She is experienced in planning weddings at home, but she and her team have a soft spot for a destination wedding, having recently ventured to Bali, Fiji, Vanuatu and Hawaii to plan perfect weddings.

Jennifer’s Reasons for Having a Destination Wedding

•

It’s ideal if you want to celebrate your wedding for longer than a single day. A wedding abroad is a great opportunity to live it up with friends and family prior to the big day in an exotic location like the Maldives or Hawaii.

•

You don’t need to travel to your honeymoon, you are already there to enjoy the romantic destination as newlyweds and start your honeymoon straight away!

•

You can create an experience you, your friends and family will always remember as being different to a wedding at home. One of my favourite weddings took place at a romantic castle in Tuscany.

•

You can plan everything, even the weather, which isn’t always possible at home. Choose the destination to suit the season.

•

A planner hired to take care of a wedding abroad will typically take care of it all. You can just relax and see your dream wedding unfold into a reality.

Josh’s Reasons for Having a Wedding in Australia

•

Traditionally, a marriage is created by a village, not two individuals in love. If your village is in Australia, then it’s only right that you’re married in Australia, with the support of, and celebrating with, your village.

•

You get to meet your suppliers before the wedding. This is important because some suppliers are really bad and some are super awesome and their websites don’t always reflect this.

•

Your fingers could swell due to humidity. Seriously though, your body changes when you fly or when you get Bali-belly. It’d be embarrassing if your wedding dress or ring didn’t fit at your ceremony wouldn’t it?

•

You don’t have to haul the wedding dress through customs. Yes, this is deserving of one whole point.

•

You’re being a good steward of your relationships. Simply put: you could be holding your wedding out of your friend’s reach. The people around you love you and want to celebrate life’s bumps on the road. As does your grandma, and your broke brother. You could alienate them by going overseas.
