If is fairly easy to get married in Greece and both civil and religious ceremonies are recognised. Before as couple can apply to get married they both need to advertise a Notice of Marriage in a local newspaper or town hall for 8 days. This must be written in Greek. Once this has been done they can apply for a marriage licence and will need valid passports, residency permits (if applicable), birth certificates both in English and Greek with an Apostille stamp. They will also need a Certificate of No Impediment in both English and Greek and notarised at the necessary embassy, together with copies of the newspaper featuring their wedding notice. An application takes about 7 days and the licence is valid for 6 months. Further application has to be submitted to the mayor with a copy of the marriage licence and he organises a wedding date.
